After a few slow weeks for new releases, this weekend is looking up. The box office should pick up a bit. One of my most anticipated movies comes out this week, and there’s another film that’s garnering a lot of positive reviews. Check out more after the jump.
Conatgion landed at #7 on my most anticipated movies for the rest of 2011. As it turned out, the movie was not at all what I expected, but I was not the least bit disappointed. It has been marketed as a thriller, but I don’t think that’s what it was. Certainly frightening, but it was much more a well-crafted human drama bolstered by performances by its incredible cast, most notably Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Laurence Fishburne, and Jennifer Ehle. If you see one movie this weekend, it should certainly be Contagion.
I missed my chance to see Warrior, but the word of mouth from friends who did go has been overwhelmingly positive. There were even some guys who admitted to be emotionally moved by film’s final act, so that’s got to say something. I’ll admit I wasn’t initially that excited for the film because I felt the trailer gave so much away. I’m sure I would have gone to see it anyway, as I am a big fan of both Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton, but I will definitely make an effort now. It’s from the director of Miracle, so if you’re into that type of inspirational tale, Warrior would probably be worth checking out.
Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star
This movie is painful even to think about. The premise is awful by default, but it’s worse because I really like Nick Swardson. His stand-up is hilarious, and he can be really great in supporting roles in comedies. I just can’t support this film though. I wish Swardson all the best in any future leading roles, I just can’t root for this movie.
So what are you gonna check out this weekend? Will you go viral or inspirational? Or maybe you’ll want to save your money for next week’s new releases, which includes my #2 most anticipated movie, Drive. Discuss in the comments section.
