Every week I will be posting and commenting about a couple of the movies that are coming out on DVD. Each week there are a large number of DVDs that come out and I will attempt to pick the ones that you are most likely to know about, or the ones that I think need to be seen by more people. Below are the five DVDs that are coming out this week that I have selected.

Castle Season 3 (Not Rated)

Description: After a serial killer imitates the plots of his novels, successful mystery novelist Richard “Rick” Castle gets permission from the Mayor of New York City to tag along with an NYPD homicide investigation team for research purposes.

Runtime: 17 hours 12 minutes

Studio: Disney

This is one of my favorite shows that is currently running. It mixes comedy and drama in a way that makes you come back every week. If you want to re-watch this amazing season over and over like I do then its a definite buy, but for one time viewers then you need to at least rent it because it is worth every penny. ★★★★★

Hawaii Five-O Season 1 (Not Rated)

Description: Steve McGarrett returns home to Oahu, in order to find his father’s killer. The governor offers him the chance to run his own task force (Five-O). Steve’s team is joined by Chin Ho Kelly, Danny “Danno” Williams and Kono Kalakaua.

Runtime: 17 hours 10 minutes

Studio: Paramount

For me this was my favorite new show of last year. CBS put together an outstanding cast who work so well together. I plan to own every season that this show makes and would suggest it to you as well. But just like with all DVD sets for shows owning usually is only for collectors, like myself. I would say its worth at least a rent. ★★★★★

The Mentalist Season 3 (Not Rated)

Description: A well-known psychic becomes a consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation to help solve crimes and to find “Red John,” the madman who killed his wife and daughter.

Runtime: 17 hours 38 minutes

Studio: Warner Home Video

This is a very entertaining show for me, but recently it has taken a back seat to other shows for me. Having said that I plan on going back and catching up so that I can rent this season and watch it. But if you are a fan of the show and own the first 2 seasons then of course you will buy this. ★★★★½

Bridesmaids (R or Unrated)

Description: Picked as her best friend’s maid of honor, lovelorn and broke Annie looks to bluff her way through the expensive and bizarre rituals with an oddball group of bridesmaids.

Runtime: 2 hours 05 minutes

Studio: Universal Pictures

What is it with these kind of movies that critics seem to like, when there is really nothing worth seeing. I guess I should say that I haven’t seen it and have no plan to. I have talked to people who I trust (movie-wise) that have seen this movie and all they could say was, “No…No, no, no.” So should you buy it? I wouldn’t, but then again its a chick flick so its up to you ladies to decide for yourself.

Unnecessary Mentionables**

Set Up (Bruce Willis, Ryan Phillippe, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Jenna Dewan-Tatum)

Well that’s all the big ones for today. Check back next week to see whats new to DVD!!!

Thor (PG-13)

Description: The powerful but arrogant warrior Thor is cast out of the fantastic realm of Asgard and sent to live amongst humans on Earth, where he soon becomes one of their finest defenders.

Runtime: 1 hour 55 minutes

Studio: Paramount Pictures

I was very excited to see this movie when it came out in theaters and I was not disappointed. This is one of the top superhero movies of the summer and is a definite buy in my book. If you aren’t big on superhero movies then you should rent it and decide for yourself.

Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop (R)

Description: A documentary on Conan O’Brien’s comedy tour of the U.S. and Canada after leaving his post at “The Tonight Show” and severing his relationship with NBC.

Runtime: 1 hour 28 minutes

Studio: Magnolia

This is a documentary about Conan O’Brien and his story as he leaves NBC and the tonight show. I am looking forward to this and believe it to be at least a rent for anyone who is a fan of this beautiful ginger.

Hesher (R)

Description: Hesher is a loner. He hates the world and everyone in it. He has long greasy hair and homemade tattoos. He is malnourished and smokes a lot of cigarettes. He likes fire and blowing things up. He lives in his van, until he meets TJ.

Runtime: 1 hour 45 minutes

Studio: Lions Gate Home Entertainment

Meek’s Cutoff (PG)

Runtime: 1 hour 44 minutes

Studio: Oscilloscope Laboratories

Unnecessary Mentionables**

The Big Bang Theory Season 4 (Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons and Kaley Cuoco)

After a few slow weeks for new releases, this weekend is looking up. The box office should pick up a bit. One of my most anticipated movies comes out this week, and there’s another film that’s garnering a lot of positive reviews. Check out more after the jump.

Contagion

Conatgion landed at #7 on my most anticipated movies for the rest of 2011. As it turned out, the movie was not at all what I expected, but I was not the least bit disappointed. It has been marketed as a thriller, but I don’t think that’s what it was. Certainly frightening, but it was much more a well-crafted human drama bolstered by performances by its incredible cast, most notably Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Laurence Fishburne, and Jennifer Ehle. If you see one movie this weekend, it should certainly be Contagion.

Warrior

I missed my chance to see Warrior, but the word of mouth from friends who did go has been overwhelmingly positive. There were even some guys who admitted to be emotionally moved by film’s final act, so that’s got to say something. I’ll admit I wasn’t initially that excited for the film because I felt the trailer gave so much away. I’m sure I would have gone to see it anyway, as I am a big fan of both Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton, but I will definitely make an effort now. It’s from the director of Miracle, so if you’re into that type of inspirational tale, Warrior would probably be worth checking out.

So what are you gonna check out this weekend? Will you go viral or inspirational? Or maybe you’ll want to save your money for next week’s new releases, which includes my #2 most anticipated movie, Drive. Discuss in the comments section.

A pair of good trips to the theater, some great Netflix rentals, and a ton of college football filled this week for me. One of the movies I saw in theaters, The Guard starring Brendan Gleeson, is now one of my favorite movies of the year. I also finally got around to seeing two sci-fi classics at home. To see what I’m talking about, hit the jump.

In Theaters

The Debt

The Debt is a pretty decent spy/revenge thriller. It draws some strong comparisons to Steven Spielberg’s Munich, though I’m not sure that it has quite as strong an emotional core as that film Still, The Debt has an interesting story of its own to tell, helped considerably by its very talented cast that includes Helen Mirren, Tom Wilkinson, Jessica Chastain, Sam Worthington, Marton Csokas, and Ciarán Hinds. The most notable performances come from Helen Mirren and Jessica Chastain, as the older and younger versions of Mirren’s character respectively. It was also nice to see Worthington play a character that reminded me of his fantastic performance in Terminator: Salvation, instead of his more recently wooden characters. I wouldn’t say The Debt is a must-see in theaters, but it’s definitely worth checking out at some point. B

The Guard

My opportunity to see this film came out of nowhere Friday night, and I’m very happy I decided to go. If I had done my research, I could have foreknown that I would love the film. The Guard director John Michael McDonagh just happens to be the older brother of Martin McDonagh, who directed In Bruges, one of my favorite movies. The two films certainly shared a very distinctive darkly humorous style. The Guard is certainly a fun watch, with Brendan Gleeson providing one of the funniest and most complex performances of his career. If he doesn’t secure an Oscar nomination, or at least Golden Globe nom, it would be criminal. The Guard in one of my favorite movies of the year so far, and I can’t wait to see it again. A-

At Home

Logan’s Run/Total Recall

I got a chance to watch these two sci-fi classics on back-to-back nights, and I certainly had a lot of fun. I had not seen either film yet, and with remakes coming up for both of them, I figured it was about time to remedy that. Logan’s Run is admittedly quite goofy and dated effects-wise, but it is still a great sci-fi adventure. It was also great to finally see Michael York in something without Austin Powers in the title.

Next was Total Recall, a Schwarzenegger classic from Paul Verhoeven, director of Starship Troopers, one of my personal favorites. I really enjoyed the movie, though knowing it was based on a Philip K. Dick short story, that doesn’t come as a surprise. I hadn’t realized it was from as early as 1992, and the entire cast looks quite young, especially Schwarzenegger and Michael Ironside. All in all, I can’t wait to pick up a copy of Total Recall sometime, as I can see the film becoming one of my sci-fi favorites. I may just wait until next year however, as we could potentially get a 20th anniversary edition, especially with the remake releasing next summer.

Just Go with It

I didn’t like the last few Adam Sandler comedies, including Grown Ups and You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, so I never really had much hope for Just Go with It. Add on to that Jennifer Aniston’s involvement and I was positively disinterested. But for some reason recently I felt like seeing it, and after looking at the top of my Netflix queue and seeing nothing but dramas and thrillers, I decided I needed a comedy. I was pleasantly surprised, though simply with the fact that neither the movie nor Aniston were terrible. Just Go with It is in no way a groundbreaking comedy, but it was good for a few laughs on a bad day. And I was happy to see Aniston in a movie that wasn’t painful to watch. As she proved earlier this summer in Horrible Bosses, she can be good in movies where she plays a supporting role, just like her previous cringeless movies Bruce Almighty or Office Space.

On the Tube

Again I was mostly occupied with football this week, this time college ball. The highlight games included Baylor’s exciting upset over #14 TCU, #4 LSU’s thrashing of #3 Oregon, #5 Boise State’s railroading of #19 Georgia, and Maryland’s close win last night over the troubled Miami Hurricanes.

Otherwise, not really anything new this week on television. I mostly did some catching up on some shows that I missed while I was out of town last week. At the very least I will have a lot to talk about next edition with the season premiere of Sons of Anarchy.

Well that’s it for this week, but check back next week for some more reviews and discussion. I’m finally getting a chance to see Sundance standout Another Earth later tonight, so that will definitely be in next week’s edition. I would also expect to be able to discuss two of this week’s new releases, Contagion and Warrior. Feel free to share any comments on this week’s edition, or anything you found yourself watching this week, down in the comments section.

This week will be a bit longer because I didn’t do one last week. Since there wasn’t much that came out last week I will just add them to the end of the article.

RELEASE DATE SEPT. 6

Hanna (PG-13)

Description: A 16-year-old who was raised by her father to be the perfect assassin is dispatched on a mission across Europe, tracked by a ruthless intelligence agent and her operatives.

Runtime: 1 hour 51 minutes

Studio: Universal Studios

I really enjoyed this movie. Who doesn’t like to see a kid who can beat up someone twice as big as them. I think that I liked this movie even more because it reminded me of The Professional (Natalie Portman, Jean Reno, Gary Oldman). In my opinion the movie is a solid ★★★★½ and is definitely worth owning. If you haven’t seen it then I suggest you should at least rent it to see why I like it so much.

Community Season 2 (Not Rated)

Description: A smarmy lawyer whose education is deemed void by the bar is forced to attend a local community college with an extremely eclectic staff and student body.

Runtime: 8 hours 24 minutes

Studio: Sony

This is one of those shows that is so crazily good in the first season that you think there is no possible way that it will be as good in the second season. That is not the case with Community. The second season was so good that it was even better than the amazing first. When it comes to 30 minute comedies, Community is by far the best, and I give it ★★★★★ . I am so excited for this season to come out on DVD that I may get it before I go back and buy the 1st season. So basically, if you must own a season of any comedy series, this would be the correct choice.

Everything Must Go (R)

Description: When an alcoholic relapses, causing him to lose his wife and his job, he holds a yard sale on his front lawn in an attempt to start over. A new neighbor might be the key to his return to form.

Runtime: 1 hour 37 minutes

Studio: Roadside Attractions

This is not your typical Will Ferrell movie. Ferrell is straying out of his normal comedy genre to a bit more dramatic role in this dramedy. If you are a fan of Will Ferrell or a fan of his movie Stranger Than Fiction, then this is a definite rent. If you, however, are a huge Fe-rrell fan (like some people I know) then it may be an automatic buy. Either way, I suggest watching the trailer first to make your decision.

RELEASE DATE SEPT. 9

X-men: First Class (PG-13)

Description: In 1962, the United States government enlists the help of Mutants with superhuman abilities to stop a malicious dictator who is determined to start world war III.

Runtime: 2 hours 12 minutes

Studio: 20th Century Fox

X-men: First Class is one of the best, if not the best, superhero movie of the summer and it’s the best X-men movie in quite some time. It was a great prequel to the already established X-men series. I had always wondered how Xavier (Professor X) and Erik (Magneto) became enemies and set up the X-men universe that has been used for years, and this answered all of my questions with great pleasure. I give the movie a resounding ★★★★★ and a MUST BUY.

The Debt (R)

I saw this one Tuesday night, and I must say that it’s a good little spy thriller. The Debt admittingly works along similar lines as Steven Spielberg’s Munich, and isn’t quite as good, but still has an interesting story of its own to tell. There are also a few nice performances in the film, most notably from Helen Mirren and Jessica Chastain, as the younger version of Mirren’s character. If you have to see anything this week The Debt should probably be it, but I’d say that its probably something that can wait until DVD, especially if you want to save your money for next week’s Contagion or Warrior.

Apollo 18 (PG-13)

I’ve found it hard to muster a ton of excitement for this one, but it could be worth a few fun jumps and scares. I won’t be rushing to it, but I might check it out if I get the chance. It just seems like the found-footage genre has gotten a bit too common to be interesting. Still, I can always enjoy a good sci-fi flick.

Shark Night 3D (PG-13)

I wasn’t a huge fan of last summer’s Piranha 3D, and mostly saw it because it was just that movie you see once with some friends and never concern yourself with again. My main issue with it was probably because it was absurdly and unapologetically gory, which makes my problem with Shark Night all the more hilarious. I would not see this movie one way or another, but the fact that it’s PG-13 seems to make it stupider, because it doesn’t even have the guts to go all out and embrace its awful and absurd premise like Piranha did.

A Good Old Fashioned Orgy (R)

Okay, so the premise of this film is absolutely ridiculous, I’ll admit. But after watching the trailer, I can’t deny that I laughed a bit, most likely because most of the actors are people you wouldn’t normally ever want to see in this kind of situation. It’s only opening in 143 theaters, so I don’t think I need to bother giving a recommendation here, I just felt like including the film because of the crazy premise and the hilarious cast that includes Jason Sudeikis, Tyler Labine, Lake Bell, Michelle Borth, Martin Starr, Lindsay Sloane, and Will Forte.

This edition has been a few weeks in the making. I have seemed to be completely busy every Monday when I would normally work on the article. Not to mention that I’ve been trying to figure out the right format for the article, and how much content I should include. At any rate, here is the 2nd Edition, which is a little more bare bones that it will usually be. Hit the jump to check out the last few weeks in review.

In Theaters

Since I have a few weeks worth of movies to talk about, I’m just going to do a quick coverage of each film.

Our Idiot Brother

A very charming Paul Rudd with a great supporting cast made this a one of my favorites in awhile. It just felt so much more good-hearted than most comedies I’ve seen for a long time. I can’t wait to see it again, and I recommend it to anyone in need of a good laugh. A-

Fright Night

Better than most remakes and vampire movies put together, Fright Night was a fantastic late-night time at the movies. It is probably the first movie that I can remember actually exclaiming out loud when startled as a character met an unexpected end. Props especially to David Tennant for the best out of several great performances. A-

The Help

I knew I was right in adding The Help to my most anticipated list a few weeks ago. The film hit me with some true emotional weight that I was not expecting. A number of fine performances, most notably from Viola Davis, Emma Stone, Octavia Spencer, and Jessica Chastain. A-

Got to revisit one of my favorite summer movies in Captain America: The First Avenger, A-; Absolutely ridiculous, but still quite entertaining, Conan the Barbarian, B; Hilariously dark and witty, 30 Minutes or Less, B+.

At Home

Heat – Finally got the chance to see this fantastic Michael Mann-directed Al Pacino/Robert DeNiro classic. Despite the two actors only sharing a couple of scenes during the film’s nearly three hour run, when they do finally sit down for a chat, well let’s just say the scene is proof of why Pacino and DeNiro are two of the greatest actors Hollywood has ever seen. An amazing multi-layered film with a great finale.

Battlestar Galactica – This is my favorite show of all time. To say it has influenced my own personal writing and storytelling style would be a flat out lie. I had been wanting to revisit the show in its entirety, so with my brother, who hadn’t seen the show yet, back at home for now, we decided to give it a go. After a few weeks we have just started the third season, and cannot wait until we reach the epic final fourth season.

Sliders – I just started watching this show on a whim a couple weeks ago on Netflix instant, and have since gotten through most of the first season. The show has certainly caught me by surprise, as I did not expect a sci-fi show from the 90′s that looked a bit cheesy and starred Jerry O’Connell would be this interesting. It has turned out to be quite a bit more original than I expected (and only slightly cheesy), and I can’t wait to see where the show in the next few seasons.

On the Tube

In all honesty most of my time with the television over the last few weeks has been occupied with the NFL preseason, but I have been keeping up with a few great shows.

Rescue Me continues to be as outrageously entertaining as ever as it winds down its final seventh season. Meanwhile, Breaking Bad grows more explosive every week, and I can’t wait to see where the latter half of the fourth season will take us.

I’ve also been keeping an eye on FX’s Thursday night comedy hour. The freshman season of Wilfred starring Elijah Wood hasn’t been perfect, but has shown a great amount of dark and hilarious potential which should spell good things for season two. The main act of the hour, Louie, is slowly turning into one of my favorite comedies. I wasn’t originally a fan of Louis C.K., but his dry and sardonic sense of humor has started to grow on me.

And of course I have been keeping up with the new season of one my personal favorites, Futurama. Not all of the episodes have been as fresh as last year, but there have still been enough gems to make me continually grateful that Comedy Central revived the series.

So what have you been watching lately? Anything good in theaters or have you been confined to the TV? Let me know in the comments section.

We at Lazy Cyborg thank you for your support and patience as our site goes though its growing pains and we try to find our groove. Stay tuned!

I wasn’t able to post this yesterday on it’s usual weekly date, but I figured it was still worth getting done. This is usually one of the slower weeks of the year, as studios tend to dump off their undesirable properties here. Still, there could be a couple solid films. One of my most anticipated films is opening this week, and I’ve already seen another film that was a pleasant surprise. I’ll address that one first in the article. Hit the jump to see what films I’m talking about.

Our Idiot Brother (R)

I just saw this one last night and cannot recommend it enough. The movie is one of the funniest I’ve seen all year, and Paul Rudd is hilariously endearing. The rest of the cast does great as well, especially T.J. Miller and Adam Scott in smaller roles. It definitely makes good use of its R rating, but it never feels vulgar for the sake of it, but rather exceedingly good-hearted.

Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (R)

I cannot wait to see this film as soon as possible. It landed at #5 on my most anticipated list, and I think it has the potential to be the rare horror movie that I enjoy. Rather than being unnecessarily gory, it looks more atmospheric and spooky, which is really the only way I can get into a horror movie that’s not mixed with comedy or sci-fi. Anything from producer Guillermo del Toro has got to be worth seeing, and this one is no different.

Colombiana (PG-13)

You know exactly what you’re getting if you plan to go see this movie. Lots of intense action, characters with too much angst, and a story so ridiculous that you are willing to let it work. If that kind of movie appeals to you, as it does to me, then I don’t know why you’re still reading this. Go check it out.

Battlestar Galactica actress Tricia Helfer has lined up a recurring role on NBC’s upcoming drama series The Firm. The show is based on John Grisham’s best-selling novel and the 1993 Tom Cruise film, but is set ten years later. Josh Lucas takes over Cruise’s role of Mitch McDeere as he and his wife Abby (Molly Parker) try to start a new life in Washington D.C. According to TVline, Helfer will play Alex Clark, the senior partner of Kinross & Clark, who brings in Mitch as a partner. Also in the cast are Juliette Lewis as Tammy, Mitch’s “feisty” receptionist, and another BSG star Callum Keith Rennie as Ray McDeere, Mitch’s volatile older brother. Production on the series is currently underway in Toronto, and it is being set up as a midseason replacement for NBC.

As a huge fan of Battlestar Galactica, it is nice to see a lot of the show’s stars getting lots more work in the Hollywood TV world. In addition to Helfer and Rennie, other Battlestar vets including Jamie Bamber (Apollo), Katee Sackhoff (Starbuck), and James Callis (Dr. Baltar), among others, have lined up series regular gigs. Mary McDonnell (President Roslin) joined the cast of TNT’s The Closer last year, while Grace Park (Athena/Boomer) will be starting her second season on CBS’ Hawaii Five-O in September.
